ALUMNI ASSOCIATION HOSTS CELEBRATORY RECEPTION
On Wednesday, April 23, the Military Road School Alumni Association hosted a reception to celebrate the acquisition of an historic property as an addition to Rock Creek Park and its transfer to the National Park Service. The historic significance of this property is its connection with the Fort Stevens battlefield located nearby.
The 3.0-acre parcel of land, in close
proximity to the Military Road School, was slated for development into townhouses. However, the National Park Trust, a private land conservancy, was able to purchase the property on behalf of the Military Road School Alumni Association. The Trust works to exchange or give the land it acquires to suitable organizations, which agree to preserve and manage such resources as parklands in perpetuity. In this instance, the land was sold to the National Park Service, which also owns the land adjacent to the Military Road School building.Mr. Paul Pritchard, president of the Trust, presented a letter of conveyance transferring this property to the Park Service. Reception attendees included many of our alumni and honorary members of the M.R.S.A.A. as well as Brightwood community representatives and other officials from the National Park Trust and National Park Service.
